Some common internet abbreviations whose meanings you probably forgot.

In today’s fast-texting scenario, we tend to use a lot of abbreviations that makes texting easier, but reading difficult… and yes, make your text look a lot ‘cooler’ than the real words do. Here are some everyday abbreviations you use, and what they have come to stand for.

LOL: Laughing Out Loud. Used to acknowledge a joke which you didn’t laugh over. LMAO (Laughing My Ass Off) if it was vaguely funny and ROTFL (Rolling on the Floor laughing) if it did make you smile.

YOLO: You Only Live Once. Coined by hip-hop star Drake; the wreath on the old Latin phrase ‘carpe diem’. Commonly used in fast philosophy talk and when trying to convince somebody to do something they ought not. It is not even 2 years old, and is already an infuriating cliché.

SMH: “Shaking My Head. An expression of disbelief, disapproval, or an acknowledgement to something uncool and totally stupid.

ICYMI: In Case You Missed It. Prefix/suffix on the information that the ‘texter’ thinks is enviable.

TBH: To Be Honest. Used similarly to IMHO, (In My Honest Opinion), both used when the speaker – or in this case the ‘texter’ – would like to assert something and sound like the ultimate know-it-all.

BTW: By the Way. Like LOL, an integral part of every other sentence.

BB: Vaguely a term of affection, short for ‘baby’ when you don’t really feel like addressing the receiver with the actual word.

IRL: “In Real Life” — meaning, not on the Internet; Internet being another word for facebook, based on which we live life BTW. Yeah I know, LOL.

Of course there are more. In fact, if you’re having a lazy day, you could put in only the consonants and claim they’re all there in the lingo. I don’t think anybody is sure anymore.

Spooning the Gateway

It's all about positioning, the Gurus say. An adept chaatwala reaches for the skies at Dehli's famed walkway. Captured by Pramod's truant lens while on a recent jaunt.

Wayanad leaves you spellbound!

Carters had a loud and truly boisterous time, with quiet Wayanad as a foil. The mist, the rain, the stream, the gentle and rich hospitality... we communed deeply with nature and with each other.

5 Commandments of Internal Branding

The first commandment is, treat the company like a brand; one that needs to be launched, built up and sustained.
Two, it’s important to be consistent. The tone of voice has to remain the same. It has to treat the employee with total respect. And most of all, if you can’t sustain it, it is better not to launch it.
Three, it has to reach deep. Even a fleeting good feeling (forget long-lasting motivation) about the company has to spring from within each individual. No amount of force or noise can change a perception unless it’s honest and pronounced in an atmosphere of caring.
Four, don’t try too hard. People suspect an invisible, deeper agenda to any communication, especially if it’s sweet-sounding. Everyone is resistant to hard-sell.
Five, try innovating with the medium. When everyone’s tired of posters, try a dangler. Or something that wobbles from the wall. Surprise and freshness are the keys.

Megha's acting skills to the fore!

Carters Megha and Pramod had a memorable experience at Navgati's 'Acting As Me' workshop last Friday and Saturday. Megha regaled the group with her very natural acting and spirited performance. Play on, Megha!

Rear View?

From various angles, the CART drivers Pramod and Santosh seem to be contemplating a rear view.

Creative reflections at NGMA

At the lush environs of the National Gallery of Modern Art and its roomy interiors, we rediscovered the immortal art of Ramkinkar Baij. His strokes were, for us, routes to inner discoveries.

Nutty Carters

The Carters recently caught up with family and friends over a few "beverages" and nuts. It was a memorable evening, punctuated with doses of laughter, singing and merry-making!

A Historic Hotel, one beauty and one thug

The historic Taj Mahal Hotel provides a grand backdrop for two jobless Carters. One from our archives, shot by the great man with once-flowing hair.

High on a hill, with a lonely goat-herd

Imagine where we Carters stayed in Coonoor... a quiet, rustic bungalow on top of a hill, looked after by a gentle caretaker called Dennis. The sounds of music, a whiff of the clouds, the campfire, ghost stories... high all the time.

Floating in Ooty

A placid lake. Cool breeze. The company of nutty fellow-Carters. The waves etched a memorable story at Ooty for all of us.

Lolo, the Bard onTuesday and ever after

Lolo read her poetry at an occasion dedicated to her: Tuesdays with the Bard, at Urban Solace, Bangalore's cafe for the soul. The eager audience said "What frank writing...what lovely verse...". Everyone loved the vibrant, soulful poetry. Way to go, Lo!

Lolo reads poetry to a full house!

Loreto, our in-house bard and blogger, read her poetry at Tuesdays With the Bard, a weekly poetry session at Urban Solace, to an enthusiastic audience. The poems were awesome, and the applause, deafening. And guess what? She is the featured poet - the main bard - for the 21st of this month at Urban Solace! Way to go, Lo.

Jumbo Joy

We Carters trotted after a young elephant we spotted at Bandipur. The little fellow, frisky and naughty, was a real treat to watch... wish we had actually ran and played with him!

Go Carting at IISC

Pramod likes to don many caps; a speaker’s cap being one of them. Recently he was spotted at IISC at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) workshop. He spoke on Copywriting. The kids absolutely enjoyed the “new trip” that he took them on. Rumour has it that it made the other speakers suffer from a certain complex which made them turn a shade of green!

Sue-ing!

“We should have dinner”, he said.

“Why not?” we said.

And that’s how we Carters landed up in Sue’s Kitchen on Friday night.

Dinner was heavenly. The glow on our faces can be attributed to the extra-ordinarily yummy food that we had just ingested.

Greetings from Team CART

Every New Year brings with it new possibilities and opportunities. Here's wishing that 2012 brings us all both and a lot more.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas was a happy affair at CART. The in-house Santa ensured that everyone had a gift, a piece of cake, and a glass of wine to celebrate the spirit of Yuletide!
